Many doctors and spiritual gurus preach the idea of meditation to calm our minds and heal our emotions. However, this idea is not always possible for kids because they do not have that maturity like adults. Even psychologists suggest that every home must have a calming corner in a preschool or at home to regulate their emotions. Calm corner resources are easily affordable in the market and most of them are quite affordable.

WHAT IS A CALM-DOWN ZONE AND IS IT NECESSARY?

Preschools that exhibit Montessori education have explained the benefits of a quiet area in classrooms. In fact, nursery teachers and pre & primary teachers also believe that calming strategies help kids to focus and relax their minds. Montessori teachers, preschool teachers, and early childhood caregivers have shared amazing cozy corner ideas for preschools.

During their academic period where they were pursuing an International Teaching Diploma in Kolkata (one of the teaching courses in Kolkata), they learned to set up safe spaces for kids. It was one of the major nursery and primary teaching skills that they acquired while doing this certification course.

International school teachers who are associated with nursery or equivalent kids say that a calming corner is one of the vital coping strategies for kids. If a child spends time in a calm-down corner his/her attentiveness will increase.

Educational approaches are changing keeping at the same pace as how generations and mindsets of kids are changing. As a result, classrooms for kids are not only about blackboard/whiteboard/digital boards, and desks. It includes a lot of essential accessories that help kids to grow emotionally, socially, and academically simultaneously.

WHAT ROLE DOES A CALM-DOWN CORNER PLAY IN A CHILD’S LIFE?

A calm-down corner helps in the brain development of children. While children more constructive ways to self-regulate, teachers must explain the importance of staying calm when they show overwhelming emotions. This particular approach is the foundation for a kid accepting and then learning to control their emotions, i.e., their foundation of EQ begins right there!

It is a classic psychological approach to teaching a child by experiencing how calming down heals every anguish and harsh feeling. It helps a kid to build the neural circuits to calm themselves more readily. While pacifying an upset child, her/his body releases soothing hormones and neurotransmitters, that in turn strengthen those self-soothing neural networks.

Thus, a calm-down corner helps a kid to build a brain and nervous system that will act as a great tranquilizer whenever she/he will become upset for the rest of her/his entire life.

STEPS TO CREATE A CALMING CORNER IN A PRESCHOOL:

  • Choosing a perfect location is the first step. While choosing it should be kept in mind that a kid’s entire focus should not that that zone. It can be in the backside of the classroom so that kids do not keep staring at it. That cozy zone should be extremely safe for the kid. It should not be near the door or somewhere near electric appliances, sharp objects, fire extinguishers, etc.

  • Teachers can add a small table and a stool as furniture that should be comfortable and relaxing. To add creative ideas teachers can use fur rugs, colorful cushions, and things like that. It should be eye-pleasing, soothing, and must radiate healing vibes.

  • A calming corner is meant to help kids to regulate their emotions through various learning approaches. A calm-down kit has an informative section as well. Teachers can add innovative signboards, posters, etc., having various ideas that a kid must learn. There can be a poster of breathing techniques, motivating quotes for kids, a bookshelf having books of moral values for kids, and so on.

  • Calm-down tools are of the finest resources for a cozy and calming corner. Glitter jars, Squeeze balls, Kinetic sand, etc., can be used.

A calm-down corner helps to promote the social-emotional learnings of a child. Preschool teachers must make sure that children understand the goal behind the space. In some schools, teachers allow children to be in the calm-down corner till they feel relaxed and join the mass.

At the same time, it is definitely not meant for students to hang out or for use during an entire class period.

An international teaching diploma has helped many preschool teachers to understand the significance of a calm-down corner in a preschool. A child goes through multiple psychological layers and decoding their mind processes is not possible all the time.

Also, spoonfeeding a kid in controlling her/his emotions is also not beneficial because it will in turn make a child dependent on the teacher. That is why calm-down zones are gaining fame in preschools where kids are developing and growing in a proper way.

If you’re a preschool or aspiring to be then learning these techniques is important for having a bright career. To know more, call: 1800-212-6400.
